Experience of biofuels use in Switzerland

More and more, local authorities at the canton level wish to encourage companies with significant vehicle fleets to engage in the use of biofuels, which proves to be very little restricting as long as as the companies in question haver their own supply logistics (storage tanks and distribution systems).

Canton of Geneva

Under the leadership of cantonal authorities and particularly the Service cantonal de l'énergie (ScanE), initiatives regarding the use of biofuels in Geneva are multiplying. In 2004, the company Serbeco decided to replace diesel with biodiesel on nearly half of its vehicles. In early 2006, the roads office of Carouge decided to run a brand-new Euro 5 vehicle on pure biodiesel. During the summer 2006, the Public Transport of Geneva conducted a very conclusive test campaign with 5% biodiesel on about half of their bus fleet. By the end of 2006, the policy was extended to the entire fleet and all the 200 or so busses now run on B5. In 2007 finally, the police of Geneva, with its fleet of about 700 vehicles and machines, took the decision to include 5% bioethanol in gasoline on its entire fleet.

At the canton level, the Energy Law encourages to design, assemble, and operate the infrastructure, facilities and vehicles used for public and individual transport of persons and goods, so as to ensure rational use of energy and reduce environmental impacts. Regarding biofuels, the Canton encourages the establishment of biofuel plants on its territory, as well as the equipment of service stations distributing these fuels. The Canton is promoting its position through its information services and is using biofuels in its own vehicles, whenever possible. The vehicles of the Canton Police already use a fuel containing bioethanol.

In 2004, the company Goutte Récupération (active in the field of waste collection and management) innovated by installing on its site a distribution column capable of delivering any mixture of diesel and biodiesel at the pump. More recently, Migros Vaud opted for the same solution at its site in Ecublens. In parallel, the Municipality of Lausanne has been supplying the Industry Services with a fuel blend consisting of 5% bioethanol, since September 2005.

During the summer 2006, the company Luginbühl & Cie (active in the field of traditional and exceptional transport) decided to replace diesel with biodiesel on all of its waste collection vehicles, thereby contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
