The "ecological scarcity" method allows for the impact assessment of Life Cycle Inventories following the "distance to target" principle. A big role is played by the current situation regarding the emissions and the goals of the Swiss and international environmental policy to define the ecofactors. The ecofactors already updated once (Brand et al. 1998) are frequently applied. The current update became necessary as new scientific findings, new political and legal targets, new international agreements, new practical experiences and developments in the international standards' system were made. The new formula was defined following the structure of the ISO standard (with its elements charactization, normalization, and weighting). The selection of assessed substances was again enlarged. The data and information background of existing factors were checked and updated.
