The Department of Energy (DOE) recognizes the importance of energy diversity. In its Strategic Plan, the DOE has set a goal to protect national and economic security by promoting a diverse supply and delivery of reliable, affordable and environmentally sound energy. As a key strategy for attaining both Presidential and Department goals, the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE’s) Biomass Program is focused on developing biofuel, bioproduct and biopower technologies in cooperation with partners from other government agencies, industry and academia. The Biomass Program supports four key priorities of the EERE Strategic Plan: 1) Dramatically reduce dependence on foreign oil, 2) Promote the use of diverse, domestic and sustainable energy resources, 3) Reduce carbon emissions from energy production and consumption, and 4) Create the new domestic bioindustry. This Multi-Year RD&D Plan (MYP) details the strategic goals, targets, activities and milestones designed to help achieve the President’s 20 in 10 goal and support EERE national priorities for energy. The MYP also establishes the framework for longer term goals that will help the nation to achieve sustainable energy security.
