Food price determining factors: The impact of biofuels

Fundação Getulio Vargas is a non-profit teaching and research institution focusing on aspects of Brazil’s development. In over 60 years of existence, it has played an active role in the major national debates, either on strategic aspects or on the questions of economitcs, administrative and legal question. It is in this context that FGV participates in the debate on biofuels. Accordingly, it has been encouraging its Agribusiness Center, in the São Paulo School of Economics, and its knowledge application unit, FGV Projetos, in theoretical and practical development of the key issues of the topic. In light of recent criticism and international analyses, FGV Projetos prepared the academic study entitled "Food price determining factors", which provided input for this paper on the future impacts of biofuels on the food chain. The main scope of the article is to bring groundbreaking contributions to the debate on the topic, adding to the solid evidence gathered to date, an approach that includes the preparation of econometric models to test the contribution of each factor in explaining the price rises, one of which is the increase in biofuel production.
