The State of California has maintained for decades an active interest in the production and application of alcohol fuels for transportation energy. This has included efforts toward development of technologies for producing ethanol and other alcohol fuels from biomass. Past studies and projects conducted by the California Energy Commission (CEC), academic institutions and other California organizations have sought to advance the timetable for commercial projects in the state to produce alcohol fuels, along with electricity and other products, from cellulosic biomass resources. The purpose of this study is to further the understanding of the progress to date and development status of biomass-to-alcohol (bioalcohol) production technologies, and to help guide continued development activities in California, the Western region and elsewhere.
