The German pilot project covers most of the important producer countries, but also covers the entire list of important raw materials, i.e. soy bean, sugar cane, oil palms, maize, rapeseed, wheat and sugar beet. The project developers stress that for certification to work effectively, sustainability requirements need to cover all other industries using agricultural resources, not just biofuels. Otherwise, there is a risk that the issues will merely be moved to another sector. For example, biofuels from plant oil may be made sustainable, but food or chemical production could be diverted to environmentally sensitive areas instead. If these global issues are fully considered, the German project can provide a model for effective biofuels certification schemes to be systematically established across Europe.
