The increased use of soybean oil for biodiesel production has coincided with a decline in use for edible products, primarily attributed to the required trans‐fat labeling beginning in 2006. As a result, soybean producers have benefitted from the sustained demand for soybean oil due to biodiesel production. This has supported the higher soybean oil prices, in turn leading to increased soybean prices. In the real world, many factors work together to drive soybean prices and it is not readily apparent how much of the price changes come from a single factor such as biodiesel production. In this paper, we will estimate how much impact biodiesel production has on prices both historically and into the future.
