Biodiesel is a renewable diesel fuel substitute which could support a number of strategies for addressing national issues, including reducing dependence on foreign petroleum, leveraging limited supplies of fossil fuels, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, reducing air pollution and related public health risks, and benefiting domestic economy. The purpose of this study is to quantify, to the extent possible, some of the benefits above. This study focuses on those benefits related to biodiesel energy balance, its effect on greenhouse gas emissions, and its effects on the generation of air, water and solid waste pollutants. This study provides a life cycle inventory of environmental and energy flows to and from the environment for both petroleum diesel and biodiesel, as well as for blends of biodiesel with petroleum diesel.
