Achieving IATA’s goal of 10% alternative fuels of non-crude oil sources by 2017 depends on developments in the aviation and fuels industry. Alternative fuels are inevitably the future of aviation and IATA’s vision is to lead the aviation industry in the future supply initiatives of sustainable alternative fuels. This is the third edition of the Alternative Fuels Report and outlines IATA’s work on alternative fuels. This report was developed in cooperation with industry experts to inform the industry about these developments. The main areas examined include global production, fuel creation possibilities and the potential of feedstock. Other sections look at, the environmental impact of alternative fuels, their contribution to Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG), local air quality and sustainability criteria. The economics section offers an outline of the forecast and impact of European Emissions Trading, followed by certification information regarding flight safety guarantees. The chapter on technologies emphasises currently available technologies as well as technologies in the research and development phase. The final chapter outlines the implementation strategy and what needs to be done to apply technologies for producing sustainable alternative jet fuels.
