This edition focuses on IATA’s initiatives and describes the advancements in renewable aviation fuels. In addition to the first commercial passenger flight powered with biofuel and following 2008’s successful biofuel flight of a Virgin Atlantic Airways 747-400, three more commercial airlines conducted successful in-flight tests using sustainable alternative jet fuel. The fuel was produced from second generation sources, including camelina, jatropha and algae. This fourth edition includes a detailed chapter on these flight trials. In previous editions of the Report on Alternative Fuels, IATA has described process technologies for making biofuels, potential feedstocks, and expected yields. This fourth edition takes a closer look at how efficiently these processes convert biomass into biofuel. Furthermore, as our understanding of biofuel technology increases, so does our understanding of the economic effects, which are explained in Chapter 6. Finally, a new section has been added this year, which introduces and profiles some of the manufacturers who will be producing synthetic fuels for the aviation market in the coming years.
