The TA-SWISS study on the perspectives for biofuels was carried out by an interdisciplinary team headed by Rainer Zah from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research Empa in Dübendorf. In addition to the doctoral environmental scientist, specialists in social and industrial ecology from the Geographical Institute of the University of Zurich and experts in materials flow and resource management from the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy also took part in the investigation. To analyse the sustainability potential of biofuels (Sustainability Potential Analysis, SPA), researchers made extensive use of mathematical models and data from the literature. To select and concretise the scenarios, the project group relied on its own calculations, and also interviewed the fourteen experts who were also members of the supervisory group for the TA-SWISS study. The present abridged version brings together the most important findings of the investigation.
