The purpose of this study was to develop cost curves (excluding feedstock costs) for the conversion of liquid fuels from biomass through the gasification to Fischer-Tropsch pathway on the basis of a 2'000-20'000 tonne/day input of biomass. This has been achieved through a techno-economic analysis deriving high level mass and energy balances for the process and order of magnitude estimates of capital and operating costs. This study has shown that the production cost, excluding feedstock cost, of liquid fuels derived from biomass through the gasification to Fischer-Tropsch pathway is similar to those derived from lignite. Further analysis of the cost and availability of biomass feedstock is required.
