Since the development of the Biofuels Directive by the European Commission and its adoption by the European Parliament, Member States have been considering and developing legislation to promote the wider adoption and use of liquid biofuels for transport. In relation to this, the broad aims of the European Union are to enhance security of supply through these alternative fuels; to generate alternative markets for the European Agricultural Community and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The main aims of this study were to estimate the total primary energy inputs and total greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, CH4, N2O and equivalent CO2) associated with the proposed production of biodiesel production by Northeast Bio-fuels Ltd from oilseed rape grown in the North East of England.
