Brazil forecasts record sugar harvest and ethanol production
Source : news.tradingcharts.com
Brazil is on course for record sugarcane and ethanol production in 2008 due to growing domestic and foreign demand for the bio-fuel, the state-run National Food Supply Company, or Conab, said. According to Conab's projections, Brazil's sugarcane harvest in 2008 will total 558.7 million tons, the largest-ever output for the world's biggest producer of that crop and a figure 11.4 higher than the previous year. Of that total, 317.8 million tons, or 56.9 percent, will be used for ethanol production, 17.3% more than in 2007. A total of 27.1 billion liters (7.3 billion gallons) of the sugar-based fuel will be produced. The remainder of the production, 240.9 million tons, will be used to turn out 32.8 million tons of refined sugar.
