UK: Biofuel refinery set to open in Teesside

Source : ft.com

Europe's biggest bio-refinery, the £250 million Ensus plant in Teesside, was unveiled yesterday as supporters argued it would reduce the economy's reliance on harmful fossil fuels and provide new jobs. The world's biggest refinery for producing ethanol from wheat, the plant will process 1.2 million tonnes of animal feed wheat a year. Now in its final commissioning stages, it is due to start production within weeks. Through fermentation and distillation, it will turn the wheat into bioethanol for transport fuel, high-protein animal feed and carbon dioxide for the food and beverage sector. Since the project was devised in 2006, environmentalists have turned against biofuels, arguing they are not a sustainable means of reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
