Scotland launches €6M algae biofuels project

Scotland launched the €6 million (US$8.1 million) BioMara research project, which will investigate the feasibility of using algae to produce biofuel. BioMara has received €4,874,414 (US$6.6 million) from the European Union’s INTERREG IVA Programme, with additional funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Crown Estate, Northern Ireland Executive and the Irish Government. Biomara will consider two types of algae: microscopic, single-celled organisms that produce oil as an energy store; and macroalgae (seaweeds) which grow fast and provide biomass.
