German researchers study higher ethanol yields from corn

Source : ecoseed.org

Scientists at the Technische Universität München (Technical University, Munich) have found a possible solution to the debate on first-generation biofuels, by increasing the energy yield of biofuel plant sources. First-generation bioethanol is produced from crops such as wheat, sugarcane or corn. Corn ethanol producers extract the sugar these crops contain in the form of starch and use these to create ethanol. However, this process creates a dilemma: using field crops to produce bioethanol diverts corn from its use as a viable food source. Antipoverty advocate ActionAid argued in a 2010 report that the European Union's biofuel policies are making poverty and hunger goals in economically-challenged countries harder to achieve.
