EU's transport sector will comprise 80% biofuels 2050

According to an independent study published by the Öko-Institut, 80% of the EU's transport fuel needs could be met with biofuels by the year 2050. Commissioned on behalf of The Greens/European Free Alliance group in the European Parliament, the study titled The Vision Scenario for the European Union concludes that the use of biofuels in the EU transport sector will increase to 10% in 2020, 25% in 2030 and 80% in 2050. These findings come only recently after the European Commission announced that biofuels have the potential to replace Europe's heavy reliance on fossil fuels and make transport sustainable by 2050. In Europe transport emissions have increased by almost 30% since 1990 and now represent over one fifth of the total GHG emissions in the EU.
