ADM investing in Brazilian palm oil for biodiesel

With vegetable oil prices soaring, agribusiness giant Archer Dan Archer Daniels Co. announced today that it's investing in production of palm oil in Brazil. ADM plans to have 30'000 acres of palm production in the state of Pará and will build a processing plant that would begin operations in 2016. ADM is already a major processor of soybean oil, a feedstock that competes with palm oil for use in production of biodiesel as well as a cooking oil. ADM's chairman, president and CEO, Patricia Woertz, says the palm oil investment will diversify the company's feedstock options for biodiesel production in Brazil, "while at the same time supporting our commitment to sustainability in terms of both agricultural production and the livelihoods of farm families in Brazil".
