South Africa: Price structure should spur biofuels industry

THE Department of Energy will make a pronouncement on regulated bioethanol and biodiesel prices before the end of March next year. This will provide a major step towards the development of a biofuels industry in South Africa. The government's biofuels industrial strategy, released in December 2007, sets a target of 2% biofuels contribution to final liquid fuels consumption by 2013. The target translates to 400-million litres a year. According to the department, the strategy's objectives include job creation, ensuring energy security and contributing to the government's renewable energy target. In a statement on Friday, the department said it was conducting two studies to determine the regulated price for biofuels.
