Wood-digesting bacterial enzyme to boost biofuel production

Source : dailyindia.com

Researchers have discovered a bacterial enzyme, which could help in extracting energy-rich sugars used to produce bioethanol from woody plants and inedible by-products of crops. The study conducted by Universities of Warwick and British Columbia researchers, has uncovered the first wood-digesting enzyme found in bacteria to boost biofuel production. Lignin is a component which makes plants sturdy and rigid, however, since it is difficult to break down, it makes extracting the energy-rich sugars difficult. Enzymes present in Rhodococcus jostii bacteria will soon make breaking down lignin easier, allowing more fuel to be produced from the same amount of plant mass.
