Swiss study urges support to second generation biofuels

Source : khabrein.info

A new Swiss study by the Federal office of power and environment assured that so-called "second generation biofuels" have good chances for the environment and development as well. "Second generation biofuels impress, because of the characteristic that raw materials can be used for their production, which are less harmful to the environment than conventional energy sources", said the study. Nevertheless, biofuel is only sustainable if it is produced from waste materials and waste products - especially from green waste or from sawmill waste and timber from demolition waste. The excitement that surrounded the so-called "first generation biofuels" has dissipated. Firstly because their preservative effect on the climate is less than initially expected. Secondly, there is competition with the production of food if maize, sugar cane, or oilseed ends up in the petrol tank rather than on the plate.
